In what cases the calibration of truck scales will give a result

If the scale error is linearly proportional to the mass of the weighed load, the calibration will produce a result. Let’s look at an example to illustrate. You weigh a car weighing 10000 kg and on the scale display you see «10100 kg». It turns out that the error is 100 kg. Then you weigh a car weighing 20000 kg and see that it weighs «20200 kg». The error is 200 kg. You can see that the error has increased by 2 times when you increase the weight of the car by 2 times. In this case the error is linear and after calibration the scale will weigh correctly.

If the error is non-linear, the results of weighing are not repeated at the same load, different results when the car is weighed in different parts of the weighbridge, then the calibration will have no effect. For example, if you weigh the car at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the weighbridge and each time you see a different weight value, then there is a problem with the scales. In this case the scale needs to be repaired.

We strongly recommend that you start with diagnostics to make sure the scale has a linear error. Only after that should you proceed to calibration. If the scale has problems and those problems are not corrected, then calibration may give either a short term result or no result at all.

To calibrate an automobile scale, you will need a reference load – a load of known mass. This can be reference weights or a weighed car. The more accurate the reference load, the more accurate your scales will be.
