Despite the fact that the mechanical truck scales have long become morally and physically obsolete, they are still in large numbers in operation. Basically they are truck scales for 30 tons with a platform length of 12 meters. For capacity and length of weighing platform they are inferior to modern electronic truck scales with 80 tons and a length of 18 meters. Therefore, many sooner or later begin to think about the modernization (reconstruction) of their scales. But the modernization or reconstruction is applicable not only to mechanical but also to electronic scales. For example, it may be the replacement of load cells and/or load cells nodes, replacement of the weighing terminal (indicator), repair or replacement of the weighing platform, repair of foundations, ramps, pit, increasing the capacity and/or length of the weighing platform, etc.

What can be a reason for modernization of truck scales

– Insufficient length of the weighbridge – not all vehicles to be weighed can fit on the weighbridge.

– Insufficient weighing capacity – the weight of vehicles to be weighed exceeds the scales capacity.

– Problems with the scale’s lever system – very often the process of setting up lever scales is lengthy, complicated and expensive.

– Problems with foundations, ramps, pit, weighing platform, etc. – this applies to both mechanical and electronic scales.

There are two options for upgrading mechanical vehicle scales

The first option is a partial modernization of mechanical scales.

It involves replacing the mechanical displaying device (dial or scale indicator) on the electronic weighing terminal. To do this, a load cell is built into the system of force transfer from the weighing platform to the indicator. As a result, the mechanical force is converted into an electrical signal proportional to the load on the weighing platform. We get a more convenient display of the results of weighing with the ability to transmit data on the weight to a computer or some executive device. But do not forget that the weighing part remains mechanical. This means that there are still moving and wearing parts in the scales, which require more frequent and more expensive maintenance than the fixed components of electronic scales.

In terms of component costs, this option requires the lowest financial outlay. But to achieve good weighing results requires an overhaul of the mechanical arm system of the scales, and this is not a cheap treat. So, this upgrade option should only be considered if the lever system of your scales is in very good condition.

The second option is a complete modernization of the lever scales.

The lever weighing system is being replaced with a tensometric one, using the existing weighing platform and foundations. In this case, the mechanical displaying device (dial or scale indicator) is replaced by an electronic weighing terminal. If necessary, work will be done to restore (or strengthen, remodel) the existing foundation. Also, if necessary, the existing weighing platform can be strengthened and/or lengthened. The cost of full modernization of scales is higher than a partial modernization, but is much lower than the cost of buying new scales. You get a full-fledged and modern electronic truck scales.
